Jay Rogers began his career in the oil and gas industry in 1990, continuing a family legacy that dates back to the 1960s. With over three decades of experience, Jay brings deep expertise in prospecting oil and gas opportunities, analyzing the economic potential of wells, and implementing strategies to reduce risk. As Managing Partner of 3 Star Oil & Gas, Jay personally evaluates and selects each investment opportunity to ensure alignment with the best interests of the firm’s partners. He believes that building strong, long-term relationships is the foundation of the company’s continued growth and success.
Michael Tanner
Chief Strategy Officer
Michael Tanner serves as Chief Strategy Officer at 3 Star Oil & Gas, where he helps shape the firm’s strategic direction, evaluates investment opportunities, and supports capital allocation decisions across the company’s portfolio. He brings a disciplined blend of engineering expertise and economic analysis to long-term planning and decision-making. Michael began his career at Marathon Oil in technical engineering roles, gaining broad operational experience within the oil and gas industry. He later worked as a research analyst with RARE PETRO Engineering, an energy advisory firm, where he conducted detailed project evaluations, performed technical and economic due diligence, and produced proprietary research utilized by institutional and private investment teams. He subsequently co-founded Sandstone Group, a specialized energy consulting and research firm that advises operators and investors on asset evaluation, development planning, and portfolio strategy. Throughout his career, Michael has evaluated projects across all major producing basins in the Lower 48. Michael earned a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering, a Bachelor of Science in Economics, and a Master of Science in Economics from the Colorado School of Mines.

Known for his ability to build and lead high-performing teams, Mike brings a team-first mindset and strategic discipline to every organization he serves.
At 3 Star Oil & Gas, Mike plays a key advisory role, drawing from his deep understanding of what it takes to build strong, results-driven teams. He believes that the same principles that lead to success on the field—alignment, preparation, and execution—are essential in the energy industry.
